While this article is not meant to replace a primary doctor’s approach, this aims to give further information on foods that fight cancer and other natural approaches.
Fighting the big C has to be from several angles to maximize one’s prognosis.
Radiation treatments and chemotherapy have been the conventional approach to hopefully beat cancer. This is with the aim of attacking and killing cancer cells quickly and dramatically.
However, this attack on cancer cells is not localized. So whatever damage the conventional therapy does on cancer cells can also happen to healthy cells.
It will make a big difference if, aside from what the doctor’s approach is, one will use all possible means to fight cancer, especially by supplementing it with good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.
Natural Approaches to Beating Cancer
Foods That Fight Cancer
According to Richard Béliveau, PhD, author of Foods to Fight Cancer and chair in the prevention and treatment of cancer at the University of Québec at Montreal, “All studies on cancer and nutrition point to eating plant-based foods for their phytonutrients and other special compounds“.
Hence it must be at least 2/3 plant-based food, such as fruits and vegetables, and no more than 1/3 animal protein, and this must be white meat like fish, over red meat which is harder for the colon to absorb.
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are rich in cancer-fighting nutrients. And the more color they contain, the more nutrients they have. Fruits and vegetables also help you control weight, which puts you at significantly less risk.
-Broccoli, cabbage, kale, bok choy, spinach, mustard greens, and Brussel sprouts.
-Lots of garlic and onions – These block nitrosamines, which are powerful carcinogens.
-Mushrooms – Mushrooms have immune enhancers which protect you against cancers.
-Tomatoes (cooked) – Tomatoes are rich in Lycopene, an anti-cancer especially against lung and prostate cancer. To release lycopene, the tomatoes must be cooked or processed like into a juice, sauce, or paste.
-Grapes – Grapes contain resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant, and its seeds contain another powerful antioxidant, activin. So if you have to snack, snack on grapes.
-Folate-rich foods – (Vit B9) they are also some of the foods that fight cancer: romaine lettuce, spinach, asparagus, eggs, sunflower seeds, fortified breakfast cereals, and fruits such as strawberries, melon, and natural orange juice. Strawberries also have a powerful antioxidant, along with raspberries and blueberries.
Budwig Diet Protocol
During the 1950s, Dr. Johanna Budwig found that the right combination of quark or cottage cheese and flaxseed oil. This mixture limits the body’s toxic burden by improving oxygenation and promoting detoxification.
To make this mixture, simply combine one tablespoon of flaxseed oil and 2 tablespoons of low fat cottage cheese or quark cheese. Blend with an immersion blender until whipped cream like consistency. Dr. Budwig even recommended it up to 8 times a day.
A nutritional counselor to nearly 30,000 cancer patients over more than 3 decades has observed amazing results with patients who have begun drinking freshly extracted vegetable juices.
Juicing provides many benefits including:
- providing concentrated phytonutrients including electrolytes, water, enzymes, antioxidants and carotenoids that help cleanse liver and kidneys;
- neutralizing the cancer-causing free radicals;
- enhancing the immune system which is important in fighting cancer, and
- creating an alkaline environment in the body which cancer hates
Although healthful juices are some of the foods that fight cancer, there is a right way to introduce juicing to one’s system. Doing it wrong can have dangerous effects.
For one thing, it has to be gradual lest one detoxifies too fast and again there is the problem of the toxic burden on the liver and kidney. Example: one can start with just four ounces a day for the first week, gradually working your way up. Consult a certified health coach regarding this.
Cayenne, habanero peppers, turmeric (curcumin). Curcumin is a good cancer-fighter aside from being an anti-inflammatory. However, for the body to be able to absorb curcumin very well, it has to be taken along with black pepper or coconut milk.
Green tea is a powerful antioxidant to fight several types of cancer. It has epigallocatechin-3 gallate, which acts against urokinase (an enzyme crucial for cancer growth)
Pure Water and Alkaline Water
Cancer cells thrive in an acidic environment, hence it makes sense to counter it with an alkaline environment such as drinking alkaline water.
Use healthy oils such as extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, cod oil, and flax oil; ditch that butter too.
Seeds / Nuts
Chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds are good. Same with walnuts, almonds, and brazil nuts.
A study by the University of Michigan showed that black and navy beans reduced colon cancer incidence in rats, because of the high levels of fatty acid butyrate, which has protective effects against cancer growth. Just half a cup a few times a week will help.
Probiotics and enzymes help maximize the nutritional efforts in building the immunity and cellular health and thus help fight cancer.
Aside from these foods that fight cancer, there are also supplements, detoxification, and lifestyle change that can help.
Vitamin C – it helps “grab” toxins in the body and remove them.
Oleander Extract – In 1966 a doctor from Turkey started to work on oleander extracts and found that it had positive effects on cancer.
Vitamin B12 – from such sources as Chorella, Blue-green algae and Spirulina as this vitamin binds with heavy metals and help eliminate such toxins.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids – known to fight free radicals
Coffee enema detoxification
This cleanses the colon and detoxifies the liver which is an important part of fighting cancer. In the fight against cancer, the dead cancer cells make as a toxic burden to the liver. With coffee enema detoxification, this problem is addressed.
Essential oils and herbs
Frankincense essential oil (Boswellia serrata) has been shown clinically to help fight certain cancers. One can massage it onto the neck as well as put three drops of it into a glass of water three times a day.
Other essential oils that help because they are anti-inflammatory are tea tree oil, oregano and rose oils.
Foods To Avoid
-Avoid red meat, processed meat, smoked meat, burnt meat, or salted meat
-Avoid processed and refined food such as sugar, refined rice, and other grains, foods that contain additives, preservatives, artificial sweetener
Exercise increases oxygen intake and helps maintain a healthy body. Moreover, it lets our body get rid of toxins by sweating. So yes, using antiperspirants can also contribute to certain cancers as it prevents the release of toxins by sweating.
Alcohol has been linked to several types of cancers, like mouth, larynx, breast cancers.
Smoking has long been determined to be loaded with cancer-causing chemicals. They cause serious DNA damage and smoking is responsible for many types of cancers.
Lack of sleep has been found to increase the risk of certain cancers. Get enough sleep and this means an interrupted one as opposed to sleeping a few hours throughout the day.
Stress causes inflammation in the body and also triggers certain behaviors such as smoking, lack of sleep, drinking alcohol, thus increasing a person’s cancer risk.
The Crucial Role of a Health Coach
